Implementing Technology into the P.E. classroom (Gym)

It would be easy for me to make an instructional video on any activity or sport for the students to see. But where I ran into a problem was having the students use technology in the gym. It is extremely difficult to do this for a few reasons. Not many teachers have done this before so it is tough to find out what would work in this situation. Also many of the students still love P.E. the way it is ... in this case we get back to the age old statement "why fix it if it ain't broke?" However I do have few ideas that might work or atleast be considered by some teachers.

1. Video Project

Students must create a video showing the proper techniques and execution of any skill that from any unit we covered during the year in Physical Education. This project can be used as a final project for high school students grades 9-12 or just a final culminating project for seniors. The video must be throrough, edited, and polished. It also must be at least 3 minutes and no longer than 10 minutes. I think this will be a good way to assess the students on a physical activity that the pick, in an area that they believe they are talented in. We will count the video project as 25% of their final P.E. grade. It also can allow the teachers to keep the videos and show future classes videos of former students that the current students knew or have heard of. Finally it allows the students to express their abilities on the playing surfaces in a new and very creative way!

With ideas like this I have feeling that many other things may be changing in my P.E. Classes!

Two More Videos on Next Vista

http://www.nextvista.org/gourmet-butcher/

This is the first video I watched on Next Vista. This Gourmet Butcher had a very nice presentation. He covered all areas that he needed and gave a really solid briefing on what it is like to be a butcher. I liked how he presented all areas of his shop and had very smooth transitions from area to area. He was also very organized. I think to make the video a little better he could try to eliminate the "a's "and the "gotta's" from his presentation. A minor detail but still was a great presentation video.

http://www.nextvista.org/stay-safer-online/

The second video I watched on Next Vista was things to do to stay safer online. A good idea to give knowledge to the public on an increasing problem. I really liked the idea of numerous people presenting on the topic, it adds a nice touch comming from different perspectives. I thought that the presentation of the material was low and voices should have been raised to deliver a better and louder speaking level.

Second Video Assignment - first draft

This should make you laugh if nothing else!

Second Video Outline

My Second video is something that I believe will be a help to Physical Education teachers both young and old. I also think that it will be helpful to their students to express to them what we as teachers are trying to teach about.

I want to create a song/tune/jungle/rap that will make it easier for Physical Education teachers to remember the New York State Physical Education Standards. There are 3 that I will be forming this song around. I think that this song ultimately will help students and teachers remember the three standards in an easier way.

  • Open with an introduction
  • Then a video of me reciting the three standards to a camera
  • Cut it and bring in a beat
  • Me "singing" to the beat the three standards
  • Closing/shout-outs
  • Credits

Student-Audience Video Outline

For my video I will explain the parts of a girls lacrosse stick:

1. Open with a title page
2. While I give an introduction and explain the parts of a girls lacrosse stick, I should have music playing softly in the background.
3. Show the difference between men's and women's stick.
4. Closing
5. Credit page

Next Vista

This website provides the public with free videos. Many instructional, and many informational. I just watched three different videos from it and I am going to shed some insight about them.

1. http://www.nextvista.org/gaming-in-the-classroom/
This video was very short, the presenter sat down and talked about what he wanted to say, and it seemed like he was rushing out whatever he had to say. He did change tone to keep the listener alive, and I liked that he did his presentation in the computer room. He also had a good topic to talk about.

2. http://www.nextvista.org/santa-clara-california/
The next video was a little longer, and really the only thing I didn't like was that the audio was not clear (wind, outside sounds). The intro was great and the video was very informative. The different voices was nices, and the video effects were excellently used.

3. http://www.nextvista.org/this-is-for-me/
This third video was much longer than the other two and the speakers spoke very fast. There was also very limited editing done to the final product. I liked the different students that were involved and the points of view. They used their camera and pictures well and the concept of helping out was outstanding.

WRONG!

Well as you saw in my last post I thought my semester was over and I would atleast get a nice break. WRONG! We started our summer class and it's right back to the grind. A lot of work to do in a little time. We shall see what I come up with.

Ending of Semester

This semester has been really useful and enlightening. The past week or so I had not been blogging because I've been working hard to get all the work completed for the end of year 1. Technology class has been fun, educational, and (like I said) useful. So many useful technologies have been presented to us in so many different ways. I really look forward to the the second year of team and the new things that will come our way.

Adding to Symphony

You want to know what Symphony really means to me. The other day in a game my team was able to do something that was pretty difficult, take something from practice and implement it to the game. We were able to clear the ball from one end of the field with only 4 passes and score a goal. Something that is not easy for any team, but especially us. It was really beautiful to watch everything come together so smoothly. It looked really great. To me Symphony in sports is that perfect play in any sport when everything just falls into place and comes together. We have recent memorable ones right here in NY from Derek Jeter's flip play against the A's or David Tyree's catch in the superbowl on Eli Manning's pass. Everyday in sports we see these things come together, some larger than others. That, to me, is what Symphony is all about.

Second Blog on Symphony

Daniel Pink's Symphony really was cool to look further into. I was able to do many of the things that Pink suggests in the portfolio section of his book. Check out some of these that can be useful to many of us in and out of the teaching field.

• Listen carefully to the great symphonies.

• Read magazines you have never looked at before and look for connections to your own life.

• Learn how to draw (and teach students to draw).

• Write down metaphors (understanding one thing in terms of something else) you encounter.

• Follow the links (play six degrees of separation with websites).

• Look for solutions in search of problems (ask why and why not).

• Create an inspiration board (tack up inspirational images).

Playing "Follow the Links" is really fun to do with anything. You get to off on a tandem and find new and fun things that you had no idea about. I did do this and found out many things about Symphony.

Also check out my first blog on Symphony that I posted in March earlier in this blog

Mini-P's

Today in class I watched two very cool mini-presentations. The first was something I think that I will use immediately. I always find myself writting notes and reminders on pieces of paper and putting them in my pockets to eventually get crumpled up and just not be as useful as they should be. Now because of Nicole I can use these sticky notes that stay on my computer screen all the time. I think this will be great and very useful to me so I can stop ending up with 7 pieces of paper in my pocket everyday or so. The other presentation was good because it gives you website templates to create a website for teachers. As a teacher in the world of technology it is important to incorporate computer usage for your students and these website templates will help me possibly create a new website EASILY for my classes. This is something also that may help me in the very near future. Thanks classmates!

VACATION!!

Finally vacation has arrived! I am very excited to be on vacation from work however I do have a jam packed schedule anyway. My group has to get a lot of work done on our project because when vacation is over we have less than a month to have it completed. I would personally like to finish it over this break to get it done with. The team I coach has games throughout the break as well as practice whenever we don't have a game. I also need to do many other odds and ends this break so there will really be limited time to relax. I just hope I can get most of it done early in the break so that I can have a little time to myself at the end before we go back.

Daniel Pink Assignment 1 - Symphony

I chose one of Pink's senses to look into a little further. The first thing I did was to google Symphony. I also did something I read about in the "meaning" topic. I played 6 degrees of symphony through the internet. Symphony comes from a Greek word meaning "agreement or concord of sound" or simply "harmonious". In music a symphony is a composition, often extended and usually for orchestra. Symphony does not imply a specific form. However Daniel Pink puts Symphony into context in his book "A Whole New Mind" saying:
".....Symphony is the ability to put together the pieces. It is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyze; to see relationships between seemingly unrelated fields; to detect broad patterns rather than to deliver specific answers; and to invent something new by combining elements nobody else thought to pair"

Symphony is focus, specialization, and analysis. It has been a large part of the "information age", but in the "conceptual age" synthesis and the abiltiy to take seemingly unrelated pieces (like music) to form and articulate the big pucture before us is crucial. And even a differentiator. Symphony requires that all of us become better at seeing, truely seeing in a new way. Symphony is not about totally simplifying a presentation or a problem in life, instead utilizing your whole mind (i.e. logic, analysis, synthesis, and intuition) to make sense of our world or in many cases for us, specific situations.

** What is needed is a symphonic approach to our material and our ability to bring it all together for our audience. This will ultimately be greatly appreciated by all !**

Marritech session

Today I had my Marritech session with Dr. Weston. A lot of important things and ideas were talked about from many different points of view. I did get into the session a little late so I will attempt to get into another session in the near future. I also looked at a tutorial today on CS4 fireworks on youtube. I am trying to do some work in the program. One thing that I would really like to try get off the ground is my efollio but I am unsure of how (if any specific way) it should be formated.

Past Week

This past week I have been working in the Dreamweaver program starting to make a website. It seem like it's going to be fun and I am looking foward to the final product. I also added some sites to my delicious, and am blogging right now. On Monday my coaching season began. Coaching is something I really enjoy and I love doing. Our lacrosse season runs from the beginning of March to the mid May. It really hasn't been as cold as I thought it would be YET, but I know it will get there.

Last week Joe gave a presentation on imovie. I like the presentation because it was helpful and it can be useful to my EEV group. Doug and I think that we will use it for our project, and now thanks to Joe we have an idea of what we are doing when we open it.

SNOW DAY!!

LOVIN' the snow day right now. No school on a Monday is great! Besides the fact that it took us 2 1/2 hours to shovel the driveway. But overall it was a nice relaxing day off. I hope for the same tomorrow.

FACEBOOK

For the longest time I have been against creating the "Facebook" account. Well finally a couple of days ago for a project, and only for a project Doug and I created a Facebook acount for a major project we are working on in our Masters class. We opened up our page inorder to reach out to more people about our topic. We feel that this will really boost our group project and find out what other people think. Check us out at Facebook under Matthew Douglas.

Vacation

Vacation was really relaxing! I had a good time for a few days doing nothing actually. I needed that. Once I got going I did many things and the vacation isn't even over yet. I got a massage at East Wind Spa which was very nice. I was able to get a lot of small errands done and do some work in my EE collaboration group for our final project. I also was able to get away for a couple of days going snowboarding upstate at Hunter Mountain. It is almost time to go back to school but the week off was really nice and needed I'm sure many of you feel the same way.

What's Up

Hey guys this past week I got this new Adobe software. It took a lot longer than I expected to get to my house. I selected 2 day delivery and it did not come for 7 days. Anyway finally when I got it I tried to install it obviously and two times installation stopped at 40%. I reached out for assistance to a friend and some tech mentors. I finally figured out that I needed to upgrade windows on my computer. I did it and after a long and tedious process I got the software on my computer. This past week I also was able to join ISTE and will soon be receiving the news letters.

The Past Week

This past week of course I was able to work a little on my project for May. Last week class on Marratech was cool. I enjoy having class in different ways to keep things interesting. This week I was able to look at the gizmoz's website. I had a really good time making some funny things (creating an avatar). You can have a look on this blog just below this post. I also looked at the source code for a couple of websites. I ordered software for class but I still did not receive it so I am waiting on that. At school we are in full swing getting ready for lacrosse season. The season is about a month away from start and I am really ready to get going.

The Week

The past week has been pretty average. Nothing crazy has happened. I have still been researching my project and preparing things for a meeting I have comming up with my lacrosse team. I was able to catch the two conference championship games on Sunday. They were pretty good. I have also really put some thought into attending the NEC conference at the end of June. It sounds like it will be fun and very informative. This past week I did purchase a new cell phone. With my upgrade I was able to get the new Blackberry Bold. It's nice and looks sharp.

Heading Back...

Getting ready to be back. Going back to school was a little tough but I think I'm geting back into the swing of things. I look foward to all the things that are ahead of us in TEAM, in teaching at East Hampton, and in the upcoming coaching season for me. Basically the spring should be pretty exciting. See everyone in class.

Christmas Vacation

This Christmas vacation has been very nice. I did a lot of fun things and got to relax a lot which is always a plus. Aside from the Christmas dinner(s) which I'm sure many of you had I also went on a small snowboarding trip and threw a pretty good New Year's Eve party. Unfortunately the break is coming to an end which I am not that happy about but it is inevitable. I am really looking foward to this weekend because the NFL playoffs are kicking off and they look to be pretty good this year.
